The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has welcomed the decision to hold the long-awaited biennial election of the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce, scheduled for 23 May 23 2026.
The association expressed gratitude to the government, the Ministry of Commerce, and all relevant authorities, describing the development as a positive step for the business community.
BGMEA First Vice President Salim Rahman said Chattogram, the country’s commercial capital, is a key hub for import and export activities. “The Chattogram Chamber has long played a pivotal role in advancing the region’s industrial, trade, and economic growth,” he said.
Rahman added that the decision to hold elections has renewed hope among entrepreneurs, noting that a strong and democratic chamber will accelerate sectoral growth while enhancing confidence and participation in the business community.
BGMEA Vice President Mohammad Rafique Chowdhury stressed that keeping the Chattogram Chamber active is crucial given its role as a major driver of the national economy and as the representative body of the regional business community. He said democratic leadership selection will help meet the expectations of local entrepreneurs.
The statement noted that repeated postponements of the election had caused uncertainty and stagnation. The announcement of the election date is expected to restore momentum and foster a more positive business environment in Chattogram. BGMEA expressed hope that capable and visionary leaders will be elected through a free, fair, impartial, and participatory process. The organization also urged all business leaders and voters to maintain a cordial, festive, and peaceful atmosphere during the election.
The Chattogram Chamber election had been delayed five times due to legal complications and High Court directives before being finally scheduled for 23 May.
