Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has imposed the highest level of alert along the Meherpur border following the shooting of a National Citizen Party (NCP) leader in Khulna, amid fears that the attackers may attempt to flee across the frontier.

BGB has intensified surveillance, patrols and search operations along the border, deploying multiple battalions to prevent any cross-border escape by the perpetrators.

Sources at the Chuadanga Battalion said BGB has strengthened monitoring across nearly 117 kilometres of the Meherpur border. The force has deployed additional personnel at sensitive points and increased intelligence gathering and routine patrols.

BGB has placed areas without barbed wire fencing under special security measures. The force said it sealed vulnerable stretches of the border to stop infiltration or the movement of criminals.

The heightened alert follows an attack on Monday at around 11:45am, when miscreants shot and injured Md Motaleb Sikder, 42, the Khulna divisional convener of the NCP labour wing and a central coordinator of the party.

The incident occurred in front of the Sonadanga Residential Area under Sonadanga Police Station in Khulna city as he was passing through the area. According to sources, the attackers aimed at his head before fleeing the scene.

BGB officials said they remain on maximum alert to ensure that no suspect escapes through the border and vowed to continue enhanced vigilance until the situation stabilises.
