Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel detained a man with 39 gold bars, weighing nearly seven kilograms, in the Darshana border area of Chuadanga on Saturday afternoon.
The seized gold, weighing 6.968 kg, has an estimated market value of approximately Tk13.33 crore (Tk13,32,63,000). The operation was conducted by the BGB in Parkestpur village.
The detainee has been identified as Rabiul Islam, a resident of Choygharia village in Darshana, Chuadanga.
Chuadanga 6 BGB Director Lt Col Nazmul Hasan said a patrol team took up positions in the Parkestpur area following a tip-off regarding the illegal smuggling of gold into India. Rabiul was intercepted at a checkpoint while travelling from Darshana towards the border on a motorcycle.
A subsequent search of his person led to the recovery of the 39 gold bars. The gold bars are currently in the process of being deposited at the Chuadanga Treasury Office.
Meanwhile, the BGB is in the process of filing a case against the suspect at Darshana Police Station.
