Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained two individuals and seized 31 gold bars weighing 3.641 kilograms during an anti-smuggling operation in Jashore early Saturday.
According to BGB officials, the gold bars were recovered from a private car intercepted on the Jashore-Narail Highway in the Nilganj area during the drive.
Lieutenant Colonel Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan, commanding officer of the Jashore Battalion (49 BGB), said the operation was carried out around 2am following a tip-off from intelligence sources.
BGB personnel stopped and searched the vehicle near Gate No. 1 of the battalion headquarters and recovered the gold bars. They later detained the two individuals.
The BGB officer said anti-smuggling operations have been intensified along border areas in line with the government’s zero-tolerance policy against cross-border crime.
Officials said the authenticity of the seized gold was verified by the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS). The total estimated value of the recovered gold, along with the seized vehicle, mobile phones and cash, stands at Tk7.68 crore.
During preliminary questioning, the detainees reportedly told investigators that the gold had been collected from Dholaipar in Dhaka and was being transported to Jashore for onward smuggling into India through the Benapole land port.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the detainees. The recovered gold is being handed over to the government treasury through Jashore Kotwali Police Station, BGB officials added.
