Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has strongly condemned and protested the case filed under the cyber law against NTV’s Joint Chief News Editor Mujtaba Khondakar.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel, on behalf of the Executive Committee, expressed this condemnation and demanded the withdrawal of the case.
Similarly, the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) has also strongly condemned and protested the case against journalist Mujtaba Khondkar.
In a separate statement issued on Tuesday, BFUJ Senior Vice President Obaidur Rahman Shahin and General Secretary Kader Gani Chowdhury expressed deep concern over the incident and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the cyber security case.
On 3 November, Dhaka University teacher Shehrin Amin Bhuiyan filed a case under the Cyber Security Act at Shahbagh Police Station against journalist Mujtaba Khondakar and three others.
The First Information Report (FIR) alleged that journalist and activist Mujtaba Khondakar edited her photo indecently and posted it on his Facebook account, and that obscene, vulgar, and defamatory comments were being made about her.
The plaintiff claimed the incident left her mentally distraught and demanded legal action under the Cyber Security Act against Mujtaba Khondakar and the three others.
Mujtaba Khondakar stated that his personal Facebook ID was subjected to a cyber-attack around 6pm on 30 October, causing him to lose access to the account. He later recovered the ID with the assistance of an IT expert based in the United States.
The account remained hacked for approximately five to six hours, and he stated he does not know what posts were made from his ID during that period.
