The government has decided to repurpose the land and existing infrastructure of Karim Jute Mills and Latif Bawany Jute Mills in Narayanganj for economic activities to stimulate industrial growth.
The initiative aims to establish modern industrial units in these areas to attract both domestic and foreign investment, generate new employment opportunities, and revitalise the local economy.
This decision was finalised during a meeting of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) Governing Board held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday.
Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman presided over the session, which focused on expansion of economic zones and optimal utilisation of state-owned unused industrial assets.
Following the meeting, PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Md Sujauddoula, informed media that the board reviewed potential for transforming these underutilised assets into productive economic hubs.
The move is part of a broader set of decisions by BEZA to increase investment and create jobs while ensuring environmental protection alongside industrialisation.
In addition to the industrial repurposing, the board decided to plant 125,000 trees across all Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in the country to maintain ecological balance and create environment-friendly economic zones.
The meeting also addressed the strict implementation of guidelines for private economic zones and the formulation of new policies to facilitate further growth.
The high-level meeting was attended by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Aawal Mintoo, Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, and Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Ashik Chowdhury.
