Discussion around the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election has intensified across the country’s cricket circles. Questions over who will contest the president’s post, whose popularity is strongest, and who will become councillors are dominating conversations.
On Monday, 1 September 2025, a BCB board meeting was held at the Grand Sylhet Hotel and Resort in Sylhet, coinciding with the ongoing three-match T20 series against the Netherlands. BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul and director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim attended in person, while other board members joined via video conference. Several important decisions were made during the session, but the most notable announcement was regarding the BCB election.
Nazmul Fahim, chairman of cricket operations, confirmed at a press briefing at the Sylhet Stadium media centre that the BCB election will take place in the first week of October. An election committee will be formed to oversee the process.
Although the exact election date has not yet been confirmed, Times Sports has learned from a close source that the election is likely to be held on 4th October.
Regarding the major outcomes of the board meeting, Nazmul said, “Some very important decisions were made today. One of the key decisions is that the BCB election will be held in the first week of October. The specific date will be announced by the Election Commission. But the election will definitely take place in the first week of October. This is information regarding the election.”
When Nazmul was asked about forming the Election Commission, he said the Board is working on finalizing a few names. “The Election Commission has not yet been formed by name. The election matter has been left to the president to recommend names. But a three-member Election Commission will be formed, and I believe we will know about it within a couple of days,” he said.
The board emphasised that the election will be held on schedule, dispelling earlier speculation that it could be delayed. According to Article 15.1 of the BCB constitution, the executive committee’s term runs for four years from its first meeting. The last election was held on 6 October 2021, and the newly elected board convened the following day. The current executive committee is required to complete the next election by 7 October 2025.
As the election approaches, the race for councillor positions and the presidential post has intensified. Under the election process, a notice will be issued 30 days before the election, inviting councillor nominations to form the next general council in line with clauses 9.1, 9.2, and 9.3 of the constitution.
In other decisions, the BPL will be organised under a three-year contract by the US-based sports management firm IMG, which has experience managing large tournaments such as the IPL. Simon Tuffel will join Bangladesh for two years to work with domestic and international match referees and umpires. September will also see specialised batting programmes and Level Three coaching courses conducted.
Additionally, Fahim noted that a four-member emergency team will be formed to implement recommendations from the independent investigation report on the BPL, ensuring proper governance and oversight.
