Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman attended an awareness programme on Bangla QR as Chief Guest at Dhaka University’s Professor Abdullah Faruque Multipurpose Conference Room in the MBA Building on Thursday, urging wider adoption of the single QR code system that spans banks, mobile financial services and other payment providers. The event, organised by the Department of Accounting in association with Bangladesh Bank and Dutch-Bangla Bank (DBBL), was aimed at supporting the government’s vision of a cashless and smart Bangladesh, and drew teachers, students, officers and staff of the university.
Rahman said Bangla QR was playing a vital role in advancing a cashless economy and supporting the country’s digital transformation, according to a press release. The programme was inaugurated by Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, who thanked Bangladesh Bank and Dutch-Bangla Bank for the initiative and said it would raise awareness of digital payments among students.
Dr Mahmood Osman Imam, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies, and Md Ahteshamul Haque Khan, Managing Director and CEO of Dutch-Bangla Bank, attended as Special Guests. Khan said digital transactions saved both time and money, adding that wider adoption of digital payments and a shift in mindset would help accelerate Bangladesh’s move towards a digital and cashless economy. The session was presided over by Professor Md Maksudur Rahman Sarker, FCMA, Chairman of the Department of Accounting, University of Dhaka.
The programme introduced participants to the features, benefits and interoperability of the Bangla QR payment system, and included a live transaction demonstration, an awareness presentation and an interactive question-and-answer session.
