Uber has launched a three-month road safety campaign in Bangladesh, distributing helmets, riding gloves and reflective vests to its Bike driver partners at a community awareness programme in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Thursday, 8 October, ahead of National Road Safety Day on 22 October.
The campaign, titled “Ride Safe, Arrive Safe”, will run from October to December, focusing on preventive safety practices and driver well-being, the ridesharing company said in a press release. Driver partners, community representatives and local leaders attended the programme.
The initiative builds on Uber’s existing road safety efforts in Bangladesh, combining awareness activities with technology designed to encourage responsible riding and support safer motorcycle journeys.
Dhaka-3 lawmaker Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said road safety was a shared responsibility and greater awareness among motorcycle riders was essential to reducing risks on the roads.
He said initiatives combining safety awareness with technology-based earning opportunities could benefit riders and communities. Appreciating Uber’s efforts to promote responsible riding and support livelihoods, he pledged continued support for similar initiatives.
Lawmaker and advocate Nipun Roy Chowdhury welcomed the programme, stressing that responsible behaviour, awareness and cooperation among stakeholders were essential to improving road safety.
“Continued collaboration between public and private stakeholders can play an important role in making our roads safer,” she said, endorsing efforts to encourage safer motorcycle riding.
Uber Bangladesh Country Head SM Jamshed Hasan said the company remained committed to working with the government and other stakeholders to improve road safety while supporting earning opportunities for driver partners.
“Through technology, education and collaboration, we want to make every Bike trip safer while creating opportunities for riders to earn through the platform,” he said.
The company said it continued to invest in technology and education to improve safety on two-wheelers.
Its existing safety features include Helmet Selfies, rider safety reminders, GPS tracking and SOS support, designed to encourage responsible riding and provide assistance during trips.
Founded in 2010 to make rides accessible at the touch of a button, Uber says its platform has facilitated more than 15 billion trips and expanded into services involving the movement of people, food and goods.
The company, whose stated mission is to create opportunities through movement, said it had served more than 7.2 million riders and generated livelihood opportunities for over 350,000 drivers in Bangladesh by 2024.
