Baul singer Abul Sarkar walked free from a high-security prison in Gazipur on Sunday after being granted bail in a case linked to accusations of insulting religious beliefs.
A senior jail official confirmed the release, explaining that authorities processed his discharge after verifying the bail documents received the previous day.
“As there were no other pending charges against him, he was released at 11:20am today,” the official said.
Following his release, the singer left the prison gate by rickshaw and departed in a van accompanied by relatives. He did not speak to reporters due to illness.
The legal case was filed last November after a folk musical performance at a traditional fair in Manikganj. A video of his remarks during the event spread on social media, prompting a local resident to file a complaint alleging that religious sentiments had been hurt.
He was later detained from a musical event in Madaripur by a law enforcement team and produced before a court, which ordered his detention.
The singer subsequently sought bail from a higher court. Earlier this month, a two-judge bench granted him interim bail for six months.
