A case has been filed with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in against Baul Abul Sarkar on allegations of hurting religious sentiment.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Solaiman Tushar lodged the case on behalf of Professor Mahfuzur Rahman of the Neurotrauma and Surgery Department at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital.
The court took the complaint into cognisance on Monday and directed Ramna Police Station to investigate the matter.
According to the case statement, Abul Sarkar performed at a pala gaan event in Zabra area, under Ghior upazila of Manikganj on 4 November. Portions of his performance later circulated on social media, where he was accused of making obscene and derogatory remarks about Almighty Allah.
Another widely shared video allegedly shows him distorting Surah Nas from the Holy Quran. The complaint states that the accused mocked Islamic beliefs with the intention of hurting religious sentiment and provoked communal unrest through inflammatory remarks and insulting laughter.
Confirming the matter, Barrister Solaiman Tushar said the complaint was lodged on allegations of religious insult and the court has instructed Ramna police to carry out an investigation.
On 21 November, Abul Sarkar was taken into custody in connection with a case accusing him of blasphemy and making offensive remarks during an event. He was brought before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court in Manikganj, after which the magistrate ordered his detention in jail.
Earlier that day, Mufti Md Abdullah, imam of the Ghior Bandar Mosque, lodged the case naming Abul Sarkar as the sole accused.
According to the petition, he is alleged to have demeaned Islamic teachings, offended religious sentiments and delivered disparaging comments with the intention of provoking communal tension.
