15 prominent individuals and five institutions are being given the country’s highest civilian honor, the ‘Independence Award’ 2026. They are receiving this award in recognition of their glorious and meritorious contribution at the national level. This information was given in a press release sent by the Cabinet Division on Thursday, March 5.
Television presenter, writer and producer Hanif Sanket is receiving the Freedom Award in the field of culture this time. For a long time, he has gained wide recognition among the audience through presenting the popular magazine program ‘Ityadi’. This program, which is a combination of social awareness and entertainment, has taken a special place in the country’s television arena.
In an immediate reaction after receiving the award, he dedicated the award to all his viewers. He said, ‘This achievement is not mine alone. This achievement belongs to all those whose love, support and cooperation have made my long journey in the cultural arena possible. On this happy day, I express my gratitude to all of them. I dedicate this award to my millions of viewers.’
He further said, ‘I believe that healthy culture can enlighten a society and bring respect to the country. I want to continue working for the country in the practice of healthy culture until my death. As I have worked responsibly in the past, I will continue to work responsibly in the future. This award will further encourage me to move forward.’
Apart from Hanif Sanket, veteran musician Bashir Ahmed is receiving the award posthumously for his special contribution to the cultural field. His voice gained widespread popularity in film songs. He was especially appreciated for his melodious voice and mastery of classical music.
The eminent musician took training from the legendary classical musician of the subcontinent, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
He gained further fame by working with renowned artist Talat Mahmud in the film ‘Talash’. Notable songs sung by him include ‘Amake Porate Jodi Eto Lage Bhalo’, ‘Jare Jabi Jodi Ja’, ‘Onek Sadher Moyna Amar’ and ‘Dekona Amare Tumi Kache Deko Na’.
The government has been awarding the Independence Award every year since 1977 on the occasion of Independence Day on March 26. Each recipient of the award receives Tk5 lakh, a 50 gram 18-carat gold medal, a replica of the medal and a certificate of honour.
