Barcelona will return to competitive action at Camp Nou on Saturday when they host Athletic Bilbao in LaLiga, marking the club’s first match at the stadium in two and a half years.
The occasion will serve as an emotional homecoming, with the partially renovated ground reopening at a temporarily reduced capacity as part of the club’s extensive redevelopment project. In a statement on Monday, Barcelona confirmed that the fixture, originally scheduled for the Olympic Stadium, will take place at Spotify Camp Nou and will welcome 45,401 supporters, far short of the 105,000 seats planned once construction is completed.
The club last played an official match at the venue on 28 May 2023 against Mallorca, before closing the stadium for major works. Since then, all home fixtures have been staged at Montjuïc, a stopgap that matched the current limited capacity but never replicated the emotional pull of the club’s traditional home.
Barcelona added that they are in discussions with UEFA about hosting next week’s Champions League tie against Eintracht Frankfurt at the revamped stadium, with final approval still pending. Though fans will not yet see the full scale of the new Camp Nou, the return offers long awaited familiarity, a reminder of the club’s identity and of a home that has been missed.
