Ahead of every major tournament, Indian cricket analyst and former cricketer Aakash Chopra delivers his assessments. The Asia Cup has been no exception, and this time Chopra’s views on Bangladesh strike a mixed note: strong praise for the pace attack, but doubts about the team’s overall prospects.
Chopra singled out Bangladesh’s fast-bowling unit as their biggest asset. Taskin Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mustafizur Rahman all earned plaudits.
“Taskin and Tanzim are excellent with the new ball. Mustafiz is effective with both the new and the old ball. This fast-bowling unit is experienced and strong. I give the most marks to Taskin, because he still bowls at 140 kmph,” he said.
Chopra stressed that the balance has shifted for Bangladesh:
“Believe it or not, Bangladesh are now a completely changed team. Their biggest strength is pace bowling.”
Bangladesh will compete in Group B against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong. Winning at least two matches is essential to reach the Super Four. Chopra, however, sees trouble for them.
“I think Bangladesh will get stuck in the group stage. Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will qualify. Afghanistan are a rocket team in T20s, and Sri Lanka never shy away in multi-nation tournaments. They always find a way,” he predicted.
He reminded that Sri Lanka had won the last T20 Asia Cup, while also reaching the 50-over final, proof of their pedigree.
While the fast-bowling attack impressed Chopra, he also highlighted areas of concern. He believes Bangladesh’s spin department lacks experience and that the batting line-up leans too heavily on Liton Das.
“Litton is a quality player, but so far an under-achiever. He hasn’t delivered to his full potential. The team depends too much on him, and at big moments they tend to choke. Their spin attack is also inexperienced,” Chopra explained.
