A Bangladeshi man was killed in a shooting incident involving India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Kulaura border in Maulvibazar’s Kulaura upazila on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Mujibur Rahman, 32, a resident of Nishchintapur area under Sharifpur Union in Kulaura upazila, according to local sources.
Lieutenant Colonel Sarkar Asif Mahmud, commander of the Srimangal Battalion (46 Border Guard Bangladesh), said a group of six to seven Bangladeshi nationals allegedly entered Indian territory amid heavy rain on Friday evening.
He said the group crossed approximately 500 yards inside India’s Lakhai Char area.
“According to information provided by the BSF, when a BSF member on duty attempted to stop them, the group allegedly surrounded him and tried to attack with sharp weapons. In self-defence, the BSF member opened fire,” he said.
The BGB commander further said that one member of the group was injured in the firing and later died after being taken to a hospital inside India.
He added that authorities are working to confirm the identity and nationality of the deceased before taking necessary legal steps in coordination with Indian authorities.
Lt Col Sarkar Asif Mahmud also claimed that the deceased was involved in smuggling activities and that his family had acknowledged his involvement. He said the group had entered Indian territory to collect smuggled goods.
He added that the BSF is expected to coordinate with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) over the incident.
If confirmed as a Bangladeshi national, the body will be handed over through a formal flag meeting between the two border forces.
Although the incident caused brief tension in the border area, the situation has since returned to normal, according to BGB officials.
