Bangladesh will not see full peace as long as India does not break into pieces, said Brigadier General (Retd) Abdullahil Amaan Azmi.
Speaking at a discussion in Dhaka on Tuesday, he said India always keeps unrest alive inside Bangladesh.
The event was organised at the National Press Club by the Sarbabhawmotto Suraksha Parishad ahead of the 28th anniversary of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord.
Azmi said India was also behind creating unrest in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. During the government of Sheikh Mujib, the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samiti was formed under the leadership of Manabendra Narayan Larma. Its armed wing was the Shanti Bahini. India sheltered them, provided arms and training, which led to bloodshed in the hills from 1975 to 1996.
The former army officer, son of the late Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ghulam Azam, criticised the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord signed in 1997. Calling it “so-called,” he said the surrender of arms by Shanti Bahini at the Khagrachhari Stadium was only for show. He claimed their armed activities continued internally and the UPDF was organised.
Brigadier General (Retd) Azmi strongly criticised the withdrawal of nearly two hundred army camps from the Chittagong Hill Tracts during the previous government. He said the withdrawal increased militant activities and weakened control in the region.
He also demanded immediate deployment of four brigades of army personnel to restore stability in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
