Bangladesh Under-20 coach Gerard Jones has raised concerns over his financial situation and personal safety while working with the national youth side.
Jones, who has been staying with the team at the Shamsul Huda Academy in Jashore for their residential camp, made the concerns public in a Facebook post on Monday.
The English coach said he was waiting for his salary and could not send money to his wife and children.
“I’m waiting for my salary. I have no money and I’m unable to send money for my wife and children to eat,” Jones wrote.
He also expressed concern about his own safety and that of his family.
“I’m worried about the safety of my family and myself,” he wrote. “I’m fearful for my life and very scared.”
Jones said he had faced repeated misunderstandings and unpleasant situations, adding that Monday had brought another difficult reality.
“I’m feeling very sad. I’m feeling depressed,” he wrote. “I’m concerned about my family and my own safety. I keep facing misunderstandings or unpleasant situations, and today I had to deal with another difficult reality.”
The post comes as Jones prepares Bangladesh for the Under-20 Asian Cup qualifying campaign. The team are currently based at the Shamsul Huda Academy in Jashore as they continue their residential preparations.
Jones left the camp for Dhaka on Monday.
There is no known specific incident in Bangladesh that explains Jones’s public concern over his safety.
That leaves the coach’s comments focused on his personal circumstances rather than a confirmed security incident.
Jones’s post has nevertheless added an unexpected issue to Bangladesh’s preparations for the Under-20 Asian Cup qualifiers. The team must now continue its preparations while the coach deals with concerns over his finances and family.
