Bangladesh claimed a silver and a bronze medal at the Carrom World Cup in the Maldives. In the Swiss league final, Hafizur Rahman was beaten by India’s Abdul Alif, while the national team secured the bronze in the team event by defeating the hosts.
The seventh edition of the Carrom World Cup saw Bangladesh represented by Hafizur Rahman, Hemayet Molla, Anis Ahmed, Basu Das, Afsana Nasrin, Farzana Banu, Shamsun Nahar Maksuda and Ashia Sultana. In the men’s doubles bronze medal match, Bangladesh were defeated, though Hafizur and Hemayet each recorded a “slam”, pocketing all the pieces in a single turn.
Seventeen countries took part in the tournament, including the Maldives, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Qatar, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Serbia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the United States, England, Canada and New Zealand. Bangladesh Carrom Federation president Ehteshamul Haque (Tuhin) attended the World Congress during the competition.
Carrom remains a popular game in households and rural communities, though it draws little attention in national competitions. Bangladesh regularly competes at the Carrom World Cup and has won medals in previous editions.
