Bangladesh Railway has honoured Md Enamul Haque, 65, a resident of Purba Chandipur village in Dinajpur, for his role in safeguarding hundreds of passengers and ensuring uninterrupted train operations.
He received the award at a function at the office of the General Manager (West), where he was also accorded a reception, said a railway statement.
General Manager (West) Farid Ahmed handed him a crest, certificate and cash reward in recognition of his contribution.
Railway officials said Enamul Haque showed presence of mind on March 23 after spotting a nearly seven-inch crack on the track between Birampur and Fulbari stations around 6:50am. He used a banana tree husk to signal danger and stop the Dhaka-bound Panchagarh Express, averting a potential accident.
Bangladesh Railway said his timely action played a key role in maintaining safe train operations.
Chief Engineer (West) Ahmed Hossain Masum, departmental heads, representatives of workers’ organisations and journalists attended the function. The organisation said the recognition was given in appreciation of his civic responsibility and contribution to public safety.
