Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the government to announce the schedule for national polls without delay.
“If the election schedule is not announced immediately, the country may turn into a failed state,” he said on Thursday while addressing a memorial event at Munshi Meherullah Maidan in Jashore.
The event was held to observe the seventh death anniversary of BNP National Standing Committee member and former minister Tariqul Islam.
Fakhrul said, “Tariqul Islam was an extraordinary political leader who spent his life resisting domination and fighting for the sovereignty of Bangladesh. He touched people’s hearts with his dedication and love for the nation, and his contributions will be remembered forever.”
He also called for the publication of a book on the life and work of Tariqul Islam.
Referring to the National Consensus Commission, he urged the interim government to implement the agreements reached among political parties, including the BNP.
“Adding new points after signing the agreement will not bring anything good. Any attempt to delay the election will have negative consequences. The BNP will never compromise with conspiracies,” he said.
Rejecting the idea of holding a referendum before the election, Mirza Fakhrul warned that such a move could destabilise the country.
“The BNP believes in protecting national independence and sovereignty. Those who seek to create unrest for their own political gain will not be forgiven by the people,” he added.
The memorial event was presided over by Jashore district BNP President Syed Saberul Haque Sabu and addressed by BNP Religious Affairs Secretary Amalendu Das Apu, former Information Affairs Secretary Mofiqul Hasan Tripti, Krishak Dal Central Joint Secretary Engineer TS Ayub, Jhikargachha BNP President Sabira Nazmul Munni, and BNP Vice Chairman Professor Nargis Begum, among others.
