Bangladesh Bank has stepped up efforts to expand cashless payments by promoting the national Bangla QR standard among merchants and businesses in Habiganj, with BRAC Bank leading a stakeholder campaign to increase adoption of interoperable digital payments.
Bangladesh Bank organised the stakeholder engagement session at Habiganj Town Hall Auditorium on 29 July as part of its broader initiative to build a cashless Bangladesh. BRAC Bank acted as the lead bank for the programme under the guidance of the central bank.
According to a BRAC Bank press release, The session brought together central bank officials, government representatives, bankers, merchants, entrepreneurs, educators and media professionals to discuss the role of Bangla QR in creating a secure and inclusive digital payment ecosystem.
Bangladesh Bank Executive Director at its Sylhet Office Khaled Ahmed attended the event as chief guest, while Habiganj Additional Director of Bangladesh Bank Mohammad Shafiqul Islam and Deputy Commissioner’s Office Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Al Nadarun Bin Akon attended as special guests.
BRAC Bank Regional Head for Sylhet Rezaur Rahman chaired the programme, while BRAC Bank Senior Manager for e-Commerce, Merchant Acquiring and Retail Banking Raihanul Kabir delivered the keynote presentation.
Bangladesh Bank officials said the Bangla QR standard enables customers and merchants to make interoperable digital payments across platforms, reducing dependence on cash and improving transaction transparency.
Speakers said wider adoption of Bangla QR would help merchants simplify payment acceptance, maintain better business records and improve access to formal financial services, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.
During the event, Bangla QR standees and stickers were distributed among local entrepreneurs to encourage merchant onboarding and regular use of digital payment solutions.
BRAC Bank said it would continue supporting Bangladesh Bank’s cashless economy vision by expanding Bangla QR acceptance, bringing more merchants into the digital payment network and increasing public awareness about electronic transactions.
The initiative comes as Bangladesh seeks to accelerate digital financial inclusion by moving everyday transactions away from cash and creating a more transparent payment infrastructure for consumers and businesses.
