Gold prices in the domestic market saw an increase on Tuesday, with Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) raising the price of high-quality 22-carat gold by Tk1,633 per bhori. Following this adjustment, a bhori (11.664 grammes) of 22-carat gold will now cost Tk2,21,441.
In a press release, BAJUS announced that the new rates came into effect at 10:30am. The association attributed the price hike to the rising cost of pure gold (tejabi gold) in the local market.
According to the new price list, 21-carat gold has risen by Tk1,574 to Tk2,11,468 per bhori. The price of 18-carat gold increased by Tk1,341, bringing it to Tk1,81,608 per bhori, while gold sold under traditional method saw a hike of Tk1,050, reaching Tk1,48,366 per bhori.
Prior to this adjustment, 22-carat gold was priced at Tk2,19,808; 21-carat at Tk2,09,894; 18-carat at Tk1,80,267; and traditional gold at Tk1,47,316.
In the international market, gold prices rose by $37 per ounce. However, the global market has seen a downward trend over the past month, with prices decreasing by a total of $172 per ounce during that period. Records show that when prices were last lowered on Tuesday of the previous week, the global price had dropped by $331 over the preceding 30 days, indicating a slight recovery in the international market over the last week.
Regarding taxation, VAT on gold ornaments will not be collected separately from buyers as it is already integrated into the pricing. Under 2026-27 fiscal year budget, the government reduced the VAT on gold ornaments to a fixed rate of Tk2,500 per bhori, replacing the previous 5 per cent tax on the total price.
Meanwhile, silver prices remain unchanged. The price of 22-carat silver stands at Tk4,607 per bhori, 21-carat at Tk4,374, 18-carat at Tk3,790, and traditional silver at Tk2,857 per bhori.
