Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman said about 45 lakh cases are pending in the country’s courts, and the government is working to cut the backlog within a year.
“The courts are burdened with nearly 45 lakh pending cases, which has severely restricted people’s access to justice,” the minister said.
He also said the government is working to reduce the number of pending cases to 25 lakh within a year.
He noted that prolonged delays have left litigants financially drained and eroded public confidence in the legal and judicial system.
He was speaking at the launch of pre‑trial mandatory mediation in 10 districts at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
The government maintains a zero‑tolerance policy against corruption in the mediation process.
On the issue of case withdrawals, the minister clarified that while the government has decided to withdraw politically motivated cases, no cases involving child abuse or rape will be withdrawn.
