Prime minister’s adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said the alleged abduction of fisherman Miraj Sheikh in Mongla, Bagerhat by some men posing as Coast Guard personnel will be investigated.
A vested interest group may be behind the incident, Zahed, policy and strategy adviser to the prime minister, said at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
Earlier, US‑based human rights organisation, Human Rights Watch (HRW), published a report on the disappearance case. According to the HRW report, this is the “first enforced disappearance” in Bangladesh since the July 2024 Uprising.
In response to the report, Zahed said that since many ruling party members had themselves been victims of disappearances, there was no reason for them to carry out such acts again.
However, he said he would personally discuss the matter with the home minister.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information has decided to form a panel of lawyers to counter false and fabricated information on social media platforms, including Facebook. However, he did not provide details on how many members the panel will have or who will be included.
At the same time, three key state institutions, the Human Rights Commission, the Anti‑Corruption Commission, and the Information Commission have remained inactive for nearly two years.
Asked when these commissions will be made functional again, the adviser said initiatives have already been taken to activate them soon.
