Australia reached the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after a dull 0-0 draw with Paraguay on Friday.
The result was enough for Australia to finish second in Group D behind the United States. Tony Popovic’s side ended the group stage with four points.
Paraguay also finished with four points but dropped to third place on goal difference. They are still likely to reach the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.
The match in Santa Clara did not offer much drama. Both teams knew a draw would help their hopes. That showed in a slow and careful game.
Australia started brighter and looked sharp down the right side. Jordan Bos and Cristian Volpato caused problems early. But they could not find the final touch.
Paraguay improved after the break. Julio Enciso tried to create openings and Mauricio helped them control the midfield. But they also lacked quality in the final third.
Bos came closest late on with a strong run and shot from a tight angle. His effort went just wide. Tete Yengi also had a late chance, but his shot was easy for Orlando Gill.
Paraguay forced Patrick Beach into a routine save in stoppage time. But neither side showed enough intent to win the match.
The final whistle confirmed Australia’s place in the knockouts for a second straight World Cup. They also reached the last 16 in 2022 before losing to eventual champions Argentina.
Paraguay now wait for confirmation, but their four-point total should be enough to carry them through.
