An attack was allegedly carried out on NCP “July March” programme in Habiganj on Tuesday evening, resulting in several injuries and vandalism of a vehicle carrying journalists.
The incident occurred in Habiganj Sadar. Confirming the matter, NCP central member Yasir Arafat said the party’s march convoy came under attack.
Chhatra Dal activists allegedly attacked NCP following its “July March” programme in Habiganj, leaving at least six to seven people injured, including NCP’s North Zone Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam.
The incident occurred after the conclusion of the march. NCP central member Yasir Arafat told TIMES of Bangladesh that the party’s activists and accompanying media convoy were targeted in the assault.
Nasiruddin Patwary, the chief organiser of NCP, has alleged that the attack on their convoy in Habiganj was a “planned” assault carried out by district Chhatra Dal activists.
According to Patwary, the attackers were armed with hockey sticks, machetes, chains, and other local weapons. He further alleged that although members of police and RAB were present at the scene, they failed to take any effective measures to prevent the violence.
Patwary said attackers snatched cameras and equipment from NCP media team and assaulted drivers and media personnel. Condemning the incident, he added that those who resort to violence against political opponents do not believe in democracy.
He said the perpetrators, their associates, and the officials who failed to perform their duties be held accountable and brought to justice.
In addition to the injuries, multiple vehicles carrying journalists were vandalised. NCP alleged that cameras, laptops, and other equipment were damaged or stolen during the attack, which also resulted in injuries to several journalists.
Zahid Hossain, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station, said Chhatra Dal leaders held a demonstration following the conclusion of NCP march.
He added that when tensions began to rise, police arrived at the scene. He further confirmed that several NCP leaders were subsequently escorted by the police to Circuit House for their safety.
