Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has strongly condemned a shooting targeting a group of journalists in Khulna city and demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible.
In a statement issued following media reports, the rights organisation expressed deep concern over the attack, which took place near UN Children’s Park in Khulna around midnight on July 14, 2026.
According to reports, several journalists were spending time together after completing their professional duties when armed assailants riding motorcycles opened fire on them.
One journalist sustained injuries from bullet fragments during the attack.
ASK said the incident was not only a threat to the safety of individuals but also a direct attack on freedom of expression, press freedom and people’s right to information.
The organisation said attempts to intimidate journalists or obstruct their work through violence go against democratic values and fundamental human rights.
The rights body reminded the government of its constitutional and international obligations to ensure a safe working environment for media professionals.
It said protecting journalists is essential to upholding Article 39 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression and the press, as well as Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
ASK called for an immediate, fair and impartial investigation to identify those involved and bring them to justice.
It also urged the authorities to take effective measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of journalists across the country.
