Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League on Saturday in Bournemouth, winning 3-2 after a nervy finish, while Aston Villa moved into second place and Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed their first league win of the season at the 20th attempt.
Mikel Arteta’s side were tested throughout on the south coast. They fell behind early before Gabriel Magalhaes brought them level, and Declan Rice took control after the break with two goals that appeared to settle the contest. Bournemouth refused to fold, however, and Eli Kroupi’s 76th-minute strike set up a tense finale as Arsenal were forced to defend deep until the final whistle.
Despite sustained pressure from the home side, Arsenal held on to move to 48 points from 20 games, reinforcing their position at the summit during a demanding festive period.
Rice underlined the importance of consistency at this stage of the season. “The win against Villa would have meant nothing if we came here today and didn’t pick up anything,” he said. “If you can win your games in and around Christmas, on top of what we’ve done already, it’s going to put us in a really good position.”
Earlier in the day, Aston Villa responded to their heavy defeat by Arsenal in the previous round with a 3-1 home win over Nottingham Forest. That result lifted Unai Emery’s side into second place, six points behind the leaders, and restored some momentum after a difficult outing at the Emirates.
Manchester City remain third on 41 points after dropping ground in recent weeks, having been held to a scoreless draw by Sunderland in their last match. Pep Guardiola’s side face Chelsea on Sunday, with their opponents still adjusting to life after the New Year’s Day departure of head coach Enzo Maresca.
The most emotive scenes of Saturday came at Molineux, where Wolves finally ended a long wait for a league victory. Having collected just three points from their first 19 games, they doubled that total with a dominant 3-0 win over fellow strugglers West Ham United, all three goals arriving in the first half.
Jhon Arias, Hwang Hee-chan and 18-year-old Mateus Mane found the net as the home crowd celebrated wildly, marking the end of a 23-game winless league run stretching back to April 26.
“It was amazing, I feel like we worked hard every day to get this point, and got our first three points and a goal so I feel good,” Mane told Sky Sports. “It’s our first win, but we’re not done yet, we want to get higher and higher. I’ve had friends and family watching here today which felt amazing.”
Wolves remain bottom of the table on six points, 12 adrift of safety, currently held by Nottingham Forest, but four of those points have come in their last two matches, offering a glimmer of encouragement.
For West Ham, the outlook is far bleaker. An insipid performance leaves them 18th on 14 points and looking anxiously over their shoulder, with little from this display to suggest they are equipped for a sustained relegation battle.
