Around 5.64 lakh children under the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) will receive vitamin A Plus capsules on June 28 in line with the National Vitamin A Plus Campaign.

The announcement was made by Mayor Shahadat Hossain at a press conference held on Thursday at the CCC Tiger Pass office.

He also outlined ongoing measures to control dengue and chikungunya in the city.

The mayor said the vitamin A supplementation programme is crucial for preventing childhood blindness and improving immunity, adding that authorities are working to ensure full coverage across the city.

According to CCC, the campaign will run from 8am to 4pm across 1,321 temporary centres in 41 wards under seven Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) zones.

A total of 2,658 volunteers will be deployed to implement the programme.

Under the initiative, around 92,000 children aged between 6 and 11 months will receive a blue capsule, while about 4.72 lakh children aged between 12 to 59 months will be given a red capsule.

Officials said the programme achieved a 99.97 per cent coverage rate last year, and CCC is aiming for full coverage this year.

In addition to fixed centres, mobile teams will operate at bus terminals, railway stations, launch terminals and other key locations to reach street children and those outside regular coverage.

The mayor also briefed reporters on the city’s dengue situation, saying 157 cases have been reported in Chattogram city this year so far, with no fatalities.

He said the CCC is continuing anti-mosquito operations, including the use of BTI, to control the spread of dengue.
He warned that legal action, including fines through mobile courts, would be enforced against premises found to be breeding Aedes mosquitoes.

The city corporation has identified wards 2, 3, 10, 17, 19 and 39 as dengue “red zones”, where intensified control measures will be carried out.

Urging public cooperation, the mayor asked residents to dedicate at least 10 minutes every Saturday to remove stagnant water from homes and surroundings.

“Collective efforts are essential to make Chattogram dengue-free and healthier,” he said.

He also mentioned ongoing civic projects, including the monorail initiative, revenue enhancement plans and efforts to reclaim illegally occupied ghats, calling for greater public participation in city development efforts.
