Measles infections continue to rise sharply in Mymensingh, with another child dying at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), taking the total death toll to 10.
The hospital also admitted 20 new children with measles symptoms in the last 24 hours, while 72 children are currently undergoing treatment in the isolation ward.
Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Associate Professor of Measles Medical Team and Focal Person Md Golam Mawla confirmed the development on Friday morning.
He said a three-year-old child from Mymensingh Sadar, admitted on April 2 with measles symptoms, died at around 10:30am on Thursday while undergoing treatment.
The child had been suffering from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and global developmental delay prior to infection, he added.
Hospital data showed that 344 children have been admitted with measles symptoms from March 17 to April 10 morning. Among them, 262 have recovered and returned home, including 23 discharged in the last 24 hours.
Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Assistant Director Administration Mohammad Mainuddin Khan said infected children are being treated in a separate 64-bed isolation ward on the eighth floor of the new building.
He said the pressure on the hospital is increasing as the number of patients continues to rise.
“Parents need to be more aware to prevent transmission from one child to another,” he said.
Authorities said three specialised medical teams are providing treatment to tackle the situation, while doctors and nurses continue to serve patients with maximum effort.
