Angelina Jolie’s latest film Couture has made history with its production achievement, but the movie has received a disappointing response from critics and audiences.
Jolie, who has built a successful career both as an actor and filmmaker, has earned major recognition over the years. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted and later directed films including Unbroken and First They Killed My Father.
However, not every project in her career has received critical praise. Films such as The Tourist, Hackers and By the Sea also received poor ratings from critics.
Her latest release Couture has now joined that group. The film currently holds a 52% Tomatometer approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on reviews from 85 critics. Audience reactions have been less positive, with the film receiving a 46% Popcornmeter score.
Directed by Alice Winocour, Couture follows Maxine Walker, an American filmmaker who travels to Paris Fashion Week and receives life-changing news. The film also stars Anyier Anei, Louis Garrel, Vincent Lindon and Ella Rumpf.
Critics have mainly criticised the film’s story and screenplay, saying it fails to fully explore its potential as a drama about the fashion industry. However, many reviewers have praised Jolie’s performance, with some describing it as a strong and vulnerable portrayal that helps support the film.
Despite the mixed response, Couture has achieved a unique milestone. It became the first fictional film to shoot scenes inside Chanel’s Paris showroom, making it a notable project for fashion enthusiasts.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025. It is now receiving a limited release in the United States and the Middle East.
Although the mixed reviews may affect its theatrical performance, Jolie’s performance could help the film find a wider audience through streaming platforms in the future.
