The monsoon season alternates between gentle drizzles and a scorching sun beating down from above. Setting aside this hide-and-seek game of nature, farmers in Dinajpur’s Birganj upazila are spending a busy time planting Aman paddy seedling.
Across the fields, there is a rush for transplantation; to finish the cultivation on time, farmers are working tirelessly from dawn until dusk.
A unique sight unfolds in Kajal village of the upazila’s No-4 Paltapur Union. With water overflowing everywhere, farmers are seen wading in, lifting seedlings from seedbeds in groups and transplanting them into the main fields.
In some places, family members work shoulder to shoulder, while in others, a festive atmosphere prevails as additional labourers join the effort. Amidst the shifting cycles of sun and rain, the rural countryside has regained its vibrancy through this agricultural hustle.
Hussen Ali, a local farmer, shared that timing is crucial in Aman cultivation. If seedlings can be planted at the right time, the yield is better; therefore, regardless of the weather, they are not sitting idle.
He expressed hope that if there is sufficient rain and the weather remains favourable, there will be a bumper Aman harvest this year, Insha’Allah.
According to Upazila Agriculture Office, a target has been set to cultivate Aman paddy on 29,578 hectares of land in Birganj Upazila this season.
Commenting on the progress, Birganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Shariful Islam stated that agriculture department officials are working regularly at the field level to provide necessary advice and technical assistance to farmers.
They are encouraging farmers to cultivate improved varieties of paddies and use modern agricultural technology. If the weather remains favourable and pests can be kept under control, there will be an excellent Aman yield this season, which will play a significant role in ensuring the country’s food security.
Currently, the vast green expanse of young Aman seedlings across Birganj signals a promising new crop season. There is a collective expectation that, through the farmers’ hard work and the correct guidance from the agriculture department, the granaries will once again be filled with golden grain.
