Arijit Singh’s return to playback singing nearly did not happen.
The singer initially questioned whether he should record ‘Yeh Awarapan’ for ‘Awarapan 2’, telling composer Amaal Mallik that the song already sounded good in Amaal’s voice. It was only after Amaal insisted that he wanted Arijit to sing it that the singer agreed to record the track.
Speaking to Pinkvilla, Amaal revealed that Arijit’s return was entirely his own decision and did not come under pressure from anyone. He also clarified that ‘Yeh Awarapan’ was not an old song waiting for release. He had been singing the track himself for nearly a year before Arijit heard it.
Amaal said he and Arijit regularly exchange music. He usually sends the singer five or six songs, and when Arijit connects with one, they work on it together for a film.
This time, however, Arijit was not immediately convinced. According to Amaal, the singer felt Amaal had already sung the song well and wondered why he needed to record another version.
Amaal made his preference clear: he wanted Arijit’s voice on the song.
Arijit eventually agreed and recorded the track a few months ago. Amaal said the singer gave the recording his full effort, describing him as a rare talent whose ability, dedication and freedom to step away from film music set him apart.
But Amaal does not see ‘Yeh Awarapan’ as a definitive comeback.
He said Arijit has not completely walked away from film music. If another song appeals to him in the future, he may choose to sing it — and Amaal would gladly work with him again.
‘Awarapan 2’, starring Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi, is scheduled to release on 14 August.
