Carlos Alcaraz underlined his dominance at the top of men’s tennis by defeating Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to claim his sixth Grand Slam title and second US Open crown. The 22-year-old Spaniard secured victory in two hours and 42 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, becoming the second youngest male player in history to win six majors.
Alcaraz stamped his authority early, breaking Sinner in the opening minutes of the final and racing through the first set in just 37 minutes. His explosive forehands and relentless aggression left the Italian scrambling to stay in the contest.
Sinner responded in the second set, capitalising on a forehand winner to break for 3-1 before holding firm to level the match, becoming the first player to take a set off Alcaraz at this year’s tournament.
Any momentum for Sinner proved short-lived. Alcaraz broke immediately at the start of the third set and produced the shot of the match – a swerving overhead smash that left the Italian helpless and brought the crowd to its feet.
Two more breaks followed as the Spaniard surged 4-0 ahead, and he quickly regained the lead in the contest.
With the New York crowd firmly behind him, Alcaraz rode the wave of energy in the fourth set. Another crucial break proved decisive, and the Spaniard closed out the match with confidence to secure a second US Open triumph.
Alcaraz and Sinner have dominated the Grand Slam landscape since the start of 2024, winning all eight majors between them. But it is the Spaniard who has gained the upper hand in their rivalry, winning seven of their last eight meetings and five of their last six finals.
With this victory, Alcaraz not only adds a sixth major to his collection but also returns to the top of the ATP rankings. He begins his 37th week as world number one on Monday, reclaiming the position for the first time since September 2023.
Alcaraz is now only the fourth player in history to win multiple Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces – two on hard courts, two on clay and two on grass – joining Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Mats Wilander.
His latest triumph confirms him as the most complete player of his generation, capable of producing brilliance across every surface and stage.
