Police have recovered the blood-stained body of local Awami League leader from the rooftop staircase of his home in South Surma upazila, Sylhet.
Abdur Razzak, 65, son of Maulul Hossain, was the vice-president of the South Surma Upazila Awami League and a former general secretary of the Upazila Sports Association.
The incident is believed to have occurred between 6:30am and 9am on Friday.
According to South Surma Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mizanur Rahman, Razzak had gone to the roof after performing Fajr prayers. “Around 9am, when family members could not find him inside the house, they searched and discovered his blood-stained body lying beside the staircase on the rooftop. Police later recovered the body,” he said.
“It appears he was attacked and killed on the staircase section of the two-storey building. The gate to the roof was locked from the inside, and family members were at home during the incident,” the OC added, noting that a detailed investigation is underway.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam said, “Razzak’s body bore multiple stab wounds to the chest, abdomen, and other parts of the body. It has been sent to Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Police are working to determine the motive and identify those responsible for the murder.”
Sources said he had been residing at his home after returning from the United States, where he went after 5 August. Reports also suggest that he had disputes over family property.
He added that only Razzak’s brother, son, and daughter-in-law were residing in the house at the time of the incident, and the property is considered secure.
“It would have been difficult for an outsider to gain access. One person has been questioned so far, and we expect to release further details tomorrow,” the Saiful Islam said.
