Police have arrested four members of a gang involved in a burglary at an office in the Agrabad area of Chattogram.
Law enforcement officials from Double Mooring Police Station recovered Tk5,92,000 and $2,000 from their possessions.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Shawon, 23, Md Hridoy, 20, Md Russel, 23, and Imam Hossain, 44. According to the police, the mastermind of the ring, Monir Hossain, remains at large.
The incident occurred on the night of 18 February at the offices of two firms, Nawab and Company and NC Shipping, located on the third floor of the BM Heights building at the Agrabad intersection.
The burglary was discovered on the morning of 19 February when employees arrived to find documents scattered, furniture in disarray, and window grills cut. File cabinets and drawers in various rooms were found broken.
A case was subsequently filed on 20 February. The complaint alleged that a total of Tk1.43 crore, three original FDR certificates (valued at Tk25 lakh each), and a DVR were stolen from the premises.
During the investigation, police first apprehended Md Shawon. Based on information provided by him, separate raids were conducted to arrest Md Hridoy and Md Russel. Police stated that the suspects confessed to their involvement during interrogation.
The suspects revealed that, according to their plan, three members of the gang climbed the back of the building on the night of 18 February and entered the office by cutting the window grills. They then broke into filing cabinets to steal the cash and other valuables, which were later shared among themselves.
Following the arrests, police recovered Tk2,50,000 and $1,000 from Hridoy, and Tk3,00,000 and $500 from Russel.
Additionally, Md Imam Hossain was arrested for allegedly providing shelter to the gang.
Based on information he provided, police recovered a further Tk42,000 and $500 from an abandoned room.
Operations are ongoing to arrest the mastermind, Monir Hossain, and to recover the remainder of the stolen money, police added.
