A fire broke out in the main building of the National Parliament on Tuesday afternoon, prompting the acting speaker to order a formal investigation.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:15pm at the office of Executive Engineer of Public Works Department-1, located within the National Parliament House. No casualties were reported in the incident.
According to a press release from the Parliament Secretariat, units from Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived at the scene promptly after being alerted and brought the blaze under complete control within a short period. The exact cause of the fire could not be immediately determined.
Following news of the fire, the acting speaker of the National Parliament, Barrister Kayser Kamal, and the secretary of the Parliament Secretariat visited the site. During the visit, they were briefed by relevant officials and provided necessary instructions.
The acting speaker has directed formation of an investigation committee to identify actual cause of the blaze, assess the extent of the damage, and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The Secretariat’s press release further said that detailed information regarding the cause and related matters will be shared once the investigation committee submits its report.
