The ousting of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and his detention through a U.S. military operation is not merely an internal political crisis of a country. It directly challenges the balance of global power, the principles of international law, and the very notion of sovereignty.

This move is illegal, provocative, and dangerous for regional stability. In this dramatic display of power, we are witnessing a concerning sign of a new global political order – a harsh reflection of Donald Trump’s power-centric and aggressive worldview.

Despite the prolonged political and economic crisis within Venezuela, foreign military intervention is not a democratic solution. The United States’ operation disregards sovereign territory and increases the risks of internal conflict and disorder. The practice of creating chaos in the name of ‘policy’ is deeply concerning for the modern world order.

This attack is simultaneously a terrifying demonstration of the United States’ interminable power. After months of mounting military, economic, and political pressure against the Maduro government, the Trump administration ultimately moved toward direct military intervention.

Although stopping illegal drugs and immigration has been framed as an effort to stop illegal drugs and migration, a pressing question remains: is this really a security-driven action, or a manifestation of geopolitical and economic ambition?

History shows that, whether it is Iraq or any other country in Latin America, the rhetoric of ‘security threats’ from the United States suddenly intensifies where there are natural resources, particularly oil and gas. Venezuela’s vast oil reserves have revived that suspicion once again. Seizing oil-bearing tankers illegally, economic sanction, diplomatic pressure. Altogether, it seems like an old strategy playing out in a new form.

Another important dimension of this incident is Trump’s personal and ideological ambitions. By reviving a modern version of the Monroe Doctrine, he seeks to reinforce American dominance across the Western Hemisphere. This aggressive stance alarmed not only Venezuela but also Colombia, Cuba, Panama, and even other regional governments. For many, it has revived memories of the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama and the removal of Manuel Noriega.

The Venezuela incident is not limited to Latin America; it may also influence the strategic behavior of global powers. The Russia–Ukraine war and China’s Taiwan tensions now face a dangerous new example, where the use of force is repeatedly legitimised through great-power politics. If disregard for international norms becomes a new rule among great powers, the world order will drift even faster toward instability.

This invasion is also a moral test for Western democracies. Will they speak in favor of human rights and international law, or remain silent for the sake of geopolitical alliances? Once again, the United States has bypassed the United Nations and multilateral frameworks, reviving the one-sided military approach that threatens global peace. If a power vacuum emerges in Venezuela, the risks of civil war, military conflict, or widespread humanitarian crisis may follow.

The reality is that democracy is never established through airstrikes. The idea that exiled opposition leaders can return and instantly transform the country into a functioning democracy is politically naïve and unrealistic. On the contrary, the likelihood of prolonged instability is far greater.

Although Trump presents himself as the ‘guardian of world peace,’ wherever his policies has taken shape, military escalation and civilian casualties have augmented.

The expanded U.S. military operations in Yemen, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, and Africa stands as evidence. Loosening the rules of warfare, indiscriminate bombings, and replacing diplomacy with raw force have collectively produced an unpredictable and dangerous foreign-policy trajectory.

There may be differing opinions on whether this aggressive behaviour stems from impulsive decision-making or calculated ambition. Some argue that Trump has no clear strategy; he makes policies based on momentary emotion. Others believe it as a deliberate and calculated effort to build his political legacy by demonstrating power on the global stage.

Regardless of different opinion, Venezuela incident proves one undeniable truth – the unrestrained exercise of unlimited power ultimately poses a threat to everyone. This is not merely an assault on a single state; it is a challenge to international law, multilateralism, and the pursuit of a just global order.

What is needed now is a clear and moral global stance. Collective resistance to unilateral military intervention by powerful states must form the foundation of a peaceful future. Otherwise today it is Venezuela, tomorrow it may be another nation. If this terrifying display of limitless power continues unchecked, the dream of global peace will drift even further away.
