Coach Brendon McCullum said England’s batting troubles in the 3-0 loss to New Zealand in the one-day series are only about that format. He believes it will not affect their upcoming Ashes Test series.
England struggled to score runs in New Zealand, except for a century by Harry Brook. Their top order did not give the bowlers enough support to challenge New Zealand’s team.
McCullum admitted being disappointed about the whitewash but said the Test series is a different game with a different challenge. He spoke to reporters in Wellington after the third ODI on Saturday.He said England is doing well in T20 cricket. He thinks the Test team has a clear plan and has played well so far. The one-day team, however, needs to improve.
McCullum said England have not yet found the right batting pace in ODI matches. New Zealand’s conditions made it harder. But he expects no problems in Australia.
He feels confident about facing Australia’s conditions in the Test series starting November 21 in Perth. This does not guarantee success but gives the team hope.
A positive from the New Zealand tour was fast bowler Jofra Archer’s return. He played well in the last two ODIs and looked fit.
“He had some time off but trained hard in Barbados,” McCullum said. “He worked on his skills and fitness. Getting through two matches at full overs is a big bonus for us.”
McCullum led England when they drew the last Ashes in 2023. He said he is very excited to face Australia in Australia for the first time as coach.
He showed respect for the tough challenge ahead. “We know how hard this tour will be. The team must stay united and strong, ignoring outside distractions,” he said.
