The incident of lynching on the suspicion of theft and on other allegations continues unabated across the country, raising concern about the violation of human rights in a changed political situation in Bangladesh.
At least 152 people fall victim to mob beating and was killed across the country between January and September this year, according to the statistic of rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra.
Of them, Dhaka division hit the highest number of 67 people while Chattogram ranked second with 28 people, creating a terrifying situation in the country, with a significant rise in incidents of mob actions every other day during the tenure of the interim government.
The same organisation also recorded that some 222 people were killed by mob beatings or lynchings since August last year until September 11, 2025, across the country with an average of over 17 deaths each month.
The latest incident took place in Gaibandha where three people were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of cattle theft in Nasirabad village under Gobindaganj upazila on early Sunday.
The incident happened around 3:00am when the victims were caught allegedly stealing three cows from a cowshed, said Bulbul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Police Station.
When locals became aware of the theft, they chased the suspects, who jumped into a roadside pond to escape but the mob dragged them out and beat them, killing two on the spot, the OC added.
Police recovered the bodies around 4:30am, meanwhile another injured person expired in the morning at Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex during treatment.
The police official said the identities of the deceased were yet to be confirmed.
Once identified, the bodies would be sent to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. He added that an investigation is underway and legal action would follow.
Different human rights organisations are raising concerns over the picture of the human rights violations across the country.
A total of 44 incidents of mob beatings were recorded in October, compared with 43 in the previous month. Twelve people were killed in such attacks, down from 24 in September, according to human rights organisation Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF).
The report, published on Friday, said the trend reflects a growing sense of insecurity in public life and raises serious questions about the performance of law enforcement agencies.
MSF said the persistence of mob violence, alongside rising political unrest, underscores the fragile state of public safety and the lack of accountability in Bangladesh.
Khulna and Barisal division saw a 13 death in each division while Rajshahi registered 11 and Mymensingh registered 9 deaths in mob lynching.
Rangpur division saw seven deaths while Sylhet division recorded the lowest number with four people over the first nine months of the year.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Support Society recorded a total of 28 incidences of mob beating across the country only in September. Of them, 24 people were killed while 21 people were left seriously injured.
On September 19, a man was beaten to death by mob on suspicion of theft in Tangail while another person, who was critically injured in mob beating in Jhenaidah, succumbed to his injuries.
A 32-year-old man named Zahirul Islam was beaten to death by a mob while allegedly attempting to flee with a stolen auto-rickshaw in Sakhipur, Tangail on September 19.
Police said Zahirul allegedly stole an auto-rickshaw belonging to Bablu Mia from Rajniti Mor village in Shreepur. When he reached Paodwachala village, locals caught him red-handed, and an angry crowd lynched him on the spot.
A 35-year-old Sujan from Garaganj area of Shailkupa Upazila died while undergoing treatment after being beaten by a mob on suspicion of mobile phone theft. Later, the youth died from the injury on September 19.
