BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury yesterday said that individuals who may have supported the Awami League (AL) but are not active members of the ruling party could be considered for BNP membership, provided they enjoy a respectable image in society.
He made the remarks while addressing a membership renewal event organised by Chattogram Division BNP at the party’s Nasiman Bhaban office in Kazir Dewri, where he was present as the chief guest.
Khosru clarified that die-hard AL supporters or identified loyalists of the ruling party would not be eligible for BNP membership. However, individuals who may have voted for the AL or sympathised with it in the past, but have maintained neutrality in political activities, could be welcomed into the BNP fold, subject to certain conditions.
“If someone is not known as an active AL supporter, and if that individual has a clean image, has not opposed BNP activities, harassed our activists, or caused harm to the party, and perhaps even supported us in indirect ways — then there is no objection to considering that person for membership. But we must remain vigilant and careful,” he said.
Outlining the party’s stance on eligibility, the former commerce minister said the BNP should avoid enrolling anyone who lacks social credibility or is associated with extortion, corruption, or unethical behaviour.
“There are certain principles and guidelines. Those who are rejected by society, who are corrupt, immoral, or lack public acceptance should not be included,” he cautioned.
He further stated that the inclusion of any individual whose presence might damage the party’s image or alienate voters must be strictly avoided.
“Do not bring in anyone whose inclusion would cause people to turn away from BNP or reduce our vote base. The image of the party must be protected at all costs,” he said.
