United States Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Stephen Koehler is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on Tuesday for a three-day official visit.
According to sources at the US Embassy in Dhaka and the Armed Forces Division, Admiral Koehler will lead a 22-member naval delegation during the trip.
This visit underscores the growing strategic importance of Bangladesh in the region and signals a deepening of defence cooperation between Washington and Dhaka.
The high-level engagement comes just three days after a trip by Sergio Gor, the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, highlighting the increasing momentum in bilateral relations.
Who is Admiral Koehler?
Admiral Steve T “Web” Koehler, who grew up in a Navy family, is a 1986 graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder with a Bachelor of Science in Physics, where he was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.
Designated as a naval aviator in March 1989, he has flown over 3,900 hours in the F-14 Tomcat and F-18 Super Hornet, recording 600 carrier landings.
He holds a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and is a graduate of the Joint Staff College and the Navy Nuclear Power Programme.
During his time at sea, Admiral Koehler served with Fighter Squadron 211 and Fighter Squadron 41, held the position of executive officer aboard the USS Carl Vinson, and commanded Fighter Squadron 143, the USS Bataan, and the USS Dwight D Eisenhower.
Throughout his operational tours, he has supported a wide array of missions, including Operations Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, and Inherent Resolve in the Middle East. His experience also includes Freedom’s Sentinel, Deliberate Guard, and Unified Protector in support of operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Libya.
Additionally, he provided emergency disaster relief to Haiti through Operation Unified Response and has been involved in peer competition operations in the East and South China Seas.
Prior to his current role, Admiral Koehler served ashore as an instructor pilot with VF-101, a placement officer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, and as the chief of staff at Joint Task Force Horn of Africa in Djibouti.
As a flag officer, his assignments have included serving as the director of Fleet Training at US Fleet Forces Command and the director for operations at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
He further served as the deputy commander of the US Pacific Fleet, the commander of the US 3rd Fleet, and the director for strategy, plans, and policy on the Joint Staff. Admiral Koehler officially assumed command of the US Pacific Fleet on 4 April 2024.
