The heightened security alert recently issued to police personnel is a routine “reminder” for safety, rather than a response to specific intelligence regarding an imminent attack, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed on Sunday.
DMP Additional Commissioner and Detective Branch (DB) Chief Md Shafiqul Islam clarified that the instructions are part of regular security measures intended to ensure the safety of police vehicles and installations across the country.
Speaking at a press conference at DMP Media Centre, he addressed concerns following recent bomb scares and the recovery of suspicious objects in the capital and other regions.
Shafiqul emphasised that while the primary duty of the police is to protect public life and property, they must also remain vigilant about their own security.
“There is no specific intelligence regarding attacks on law enforcement,” he said.
“However, as there have been recent incidents involving bombs and the spread of false rumours, we have reissued these instructions to ensure our field officers remain alert”.
Shafiqul described the alert as a supervisory “reminder” from senior officers to those working on the ground to maintain a high state of vigilance.
When questioned about the “umbrella bomb” incident in Motijheel, the DB chief noted that Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit is leading the primary investigation.
The DB is currently conducting a “shadow investigation” to identify and apprehend those involved, though he declined to provide further details while the inquiry is ongoing.
Regarding the potential involvement of specific organisations, he suggested that such acts are rarely the work of a single individual. Instead, they are typically carried out by groups seeking to promote a particular mandate or ideology.
