A long period of stagnation in Bangladesh Police promotions is set to break, with the process beginning this month. Nearly 500 officers, ranging from the rank of inspector to additional inspector general of police, are getting promoted within a short time frame.
A meeting of the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) has already taken place for this purpose. Following the completion of several more meetings shortly, the promotion bottleneck will break based on seniority, merit, efficiency, and capability.
The promotion process, starting this week, will be completed by the second week of coming November, according to multiple officials in the police branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs who confirmed the information to TIMES of Bangladesh.
Speaking to TIMES on Tuesday, two officials holding the ranks of additional deputy inspector general and deputy inspector general, posted at Police Headquarters, said during the previous Awami League regime, many officers were deprived of promotions due to political considerations despite being professional.
Many did not receive good postings, and promotions for several officers remained stuck for two to four years.
Promotions nearing finalisation
Under these circumstances, through DPC and Superior Selection Board (SSB) meetings, promotions of 485 officers from the 15th to 38th BCS batches, including inspector-rank officers, are near finalisation.
During the last Police Week, the Bangladesh Police Service Association raised the demand for promotions with the prime minister and home minister. An official of the association said 159 inspectors will be promoted to assistant superintendents of police this week.
Following this, more than 150 assistant superintendents of police from the 36th, 37th, and 38th BCS batches will be promoted to additional superintendents of police.
In phases, 95 additional superintendents of police from the 28th, 29th, and 30th batches will become superintendents of police.
More than 60 superintendents of police from the 22nd and 24th batches will become additional deputy inspector general, including two from the 22nd batch and the rest from the 24th batch.
Meanwhile, 20 additional deputy inspector generals from the 21st, 22nd, and 24th batches will be promoted to deputy inspector general. Two deputy inspector generals from the 15th and 17th batches will receive promotions to additional inspector general of police.
Moreover, promotions for the 25th batch will take place shortly after the 24th batch.
Vetting and final clearance
According to multiple sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Police Headquarters, all types of documents, including officers’ career details, Annual Confidential Reports (ACR), and intelligence agency vetting reports, have been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The promotion deadlock is breaking through the SSB meetings. Another source noted that in a notification issued on 21 October 2025 by the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, 80 police inspectors were promoted to assistant superintendent of police.
