Two passengers were killed and two others critically injured in a road accident on the Netrakona-Mymensingh highway on Thursday night.
The accident occurred around 10pm near the Narandia Union Health Complex when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw rammed into a stationary sand-laden truck, police said.
The injured were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Jalil, 45, of China Mor area under Mymensingh Kotwali Police Station, and Shahid Mia, 42, of Asdati village in Netrakona Sadar upazila. Among the injured is Shahid Mia’s wife, Rezia Akter, 40.
According to police and local sources, the truck had broken down and was parked on one side of the highway. The auto-rickshaw, travelling from Mymensingh, failed to notice the stationary vehicle in the darkness and crashed into it. The impact was so severe that the auto-rickshaw was completely destroyed, killing two passengers on the spot.
Confirming the incident, Shyamganj Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahid Mia said the bodies were recovered and taken to the police station. “After completing necessary legal procedures, the bodies will be handed over to their families,” he added.
