Cyclone Montha, which developed over the Bay of Bengal, has gradually weakened and turned into a well-marked low-pressure area.
According to the latest updates, the cyclone is now situated over northern Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of India.
Its impact, however, was felt across Bangladesh on Thursday, as several parts of the country experienced rainfall. Meteorologists forecast that rain may continue in many districts on Friday.
Mostofa Kamal Palash, a weather and climate researcher at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, shared the forecast in a Facebook post from his verified account. He also mentioned the possible timing and regional distribution of rainfall.
According to his post, rain is likely between 8:00am and 5:00pm on Friday across different regions of the country due to the remnants of Montha. Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions are expected to see light to moderate rain throughout the day.
In Rangpur division, light rain is also expected during the same period, with higher chances in Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Nilphamari, and Lalmonirhat districts.
Similarly, all districts under Rajshahi division may experience light rainfall, with relatively heavier showers likely in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Joypurhat, Naogaon, Bogura, and Sirajganj.
Meanwhile, the likelihood of rain before 3:00pm is relatively low in most parts of Dhaka division – except Tangail, Gazipur, and Kishoreganj districts. In Khulna division, except for Kushtia and Meherpur, some coastal districts may see light rainfall in scattered areas.
Palash also mentioned that from around 10:00am to 5:00pm, light showers could occur in some coastal areas of Barishal division, while scattered rainfall is also possible in Noakhali and Feni districts under Chattogram division.
Meteorologists said the effects of Montha may linger for another day, though the risk of further deterioration is minimal as the system continues to weaken over land.
