Substitute Savinho nearly found a leveller just after the hour mark, only for Pau Torres to make a desperate clearance off the line. Villa, however, continued to hold firm, with Donnarumma twice denying Jadon Sancho late on before Haaland saw a goal ruled out for offside and crashed painfully into the post in stoppage time.
