Bangladesh’s young tennis talent Jarif Abrar has secured a place in the semi-finals of the 35th Bangladesh World Tennis Tour Junior J30 tournament after a dramatic win against India’s Shaunak Chatterjee. The quarter-final match, held at the National Tennis Complex in Ramna, lasted nearly two hours and forty-five minutes and saw Jarif emerge victorious in three sets.
Jarif faced the tournament’s second seed in what turned out to be a fiercely contested encounter. The opening set was tightly fought, with Chatterjee edging ahead to win it 7–5. Undeterred, Jarif responded with a dominant performance in the second set, winning it 6–2 to bring the match level.
The deciding third set was full of twists and turns. Jarif took an early 3–0 lead and appeared to be heading towards a comfortable finish. However, Chatterjee fought back impressively, winning five straight games to go 5–3 up. Just when the match seemed to be slipping away, Jarif produced a spirited comeback, drawing level at 5–5 and then taking the final two games to claim the set 7–5 and seal a memorable win.
Speaking after the match, Jarif credited fortune for playing a part in his success. “Today, I was lucky,” he said. “I don’t think I was supposed to win this match. At one point, I was down 3–5. One small gap turned the game around. The momentum just shifted.”
Despite the tough contest, Jarif remains confident about his chances going forward. “Insha’Allah, I will play a good match in the semi-final,” he said. “I’m very confident that I can win the tournament.”
With only two matches standing between him and the title, Jarif’s dream of becoming champion is now within reach.
