Kane Williamson has been left out of New Zealand’s squad for the upcoming Twenty20 series against England later this month due to what has been described as a “minor medical issue,” coach Rob Walter confirmed on Monday.
The 35-year-old former captain, who declined a central contract with New Zealand Cricket for the current season, also missed the recent home T20 series against Australia, which the Black Caps lost 2-0.
“Kane had to overcome a minor medical issue in the past month, and we both agreed he needs some more time to get himself physically ready to return,” said Walter. “He’s obviously a world-class player and we’re hoping these two weeks will ensure he’s ready for the ODIs against England and the following tour by the West Indies.”
New Zealand will face England in three T20 matches, starting in Christchurch on 18 and 20 October, before heading to Eden Park in Auckland for the final game on 23 October. A three-match one-day international series will follow in late October and early November.
The T20 squad will also be without fast bowler Ben Sears, who has been ruled out after suffering a hamstring tear in training that requires surgery.
However, the squad has been boosted by the return of spinner Mitchell Santner, who resumes his role as white-ball captain after recovering from abdominal surgery. Santner last captained New Zealand in December 2023.
“It’s great to have Mitch back,” said Walter. “Alongside being our leader, he’s one of the very best white-ball spinners in the world and his skills and experience will be a welcome addition.”
All-rounder Rachin Ravindra also returns after missing the Australia series with a facial injury. Jimmy Neesham, who impressed in Ravindra’s absence, keeps his place in the squad.
“Likewise, it’s nice to welcome back Rachin who was unlucky to miss out on Australia and I know is really excited for this series,” Walter added.
