At least 6 people have died after consuming toxic liquor in Chuadanga Sadar upazila, while 3 others remain in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
According to police, several individuals drank locally produced liquor together in the Dingadah Bazar area under Shankarchandra Union on Thursday night.
Since Saturday, 5 of them reportedly died one after another. The incident came to light after another person, who was under treatment at a hospital, died on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Laltu alias Ripu (30), a van driver from Pirojkhali village; Kheder Ali (40), a van driver from Noforkanti village; Mohammad Selim (40), a fish trader from Khejura village; Mohammad Shahid (45), a labourer from Shankarchandra village; Mohammad Samir (55), a mill worker from Dhingedah village; and Sardar Mohammad Laltu (52), a worker from the Asia Biscuit Factory area.
Locals alleged that illegal liquor trading has been going on in the market for a long time without any intervention from the authorities. They blamed the lack of monitoring by law enforcement for the repeated incidents of alcohol-related deaths.
Dr AKM Nasim Uz Zaman, the on-duty physician at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital’s emergency department, said, “One of the patients suffering from alcohol poisoning was admitted to the hospital. He later died while undergoing treatment. The body has been sent for autopsy.”
Chuadanga Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khaledur Rahman confirmed the incident, saying, “On Thursday night, several people in the Dhingedah Bazar area consumed spirit together.
“Five of them died between Saturday and Sunday. Another person died while receiving treatment on Sunday night. We are investigating the matter.”
